Folic acid is one of the B vitamins. It is involved in the synthesis of nucleic acids, in the metabolism of fat and in the transformation of some amino acids into others.
It allows a correct cell division and is very important, mainly, in terms of the development of the fetus' nervous system (during pregnancy). the need for folic acid doubles during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
It also plays an important role in cases of alcoholism.
Deficiency in this vitamin is also associated with depression, atherosclerosis and osteoporosis.
In general, it can be advised as an adjunct:
- In the treatment of pernicious anemia (in the elderly)
- In the prevention of neuronal tube defects (to be taken during pregnancy or when you intend to become pregnant)
- In case of alcoholism
- In helping to reduce high levels of homocysteine
As a dietary supplement for adults and during pregnancy, take 1 tablet a day, preferably with a meal, or according to a doctor's or your health technician's prescription. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake.
